Bambu Lab R1 CO2 laser on a wooden desk next to a wall of design sketches

The Bambu Lab R1 is a 55W CO2 desktop laser from the team behind the X1 and P1 printers. It cuts and engraves wood, clear acrylic, leather, fabric, paper and foam, and it engraves glass, ceramic and coated metal.

It is built to be easy. The R1 lines up its own laser, finds the focus for you, and uses two cameras to place each cut right where you want it. You get a 600 x 300 mm bed, fast 1000 mm/s motion, and a fully enclosed Class 1 body that fits on a sturdy table.

Key features

55W CO2 power for real cutting

A 55W CO2 tube cuts up to 18 mm black walnut plywood and 20 mm acrylic in one pass with the medium or long focus lens. The short focus lens that ships with it handles 15 mm plywood and 20 mm acrylic. Clear acrylic works too, which diode lasers struggle with.

Lines up its own laser

CO2 lasers normally need mirror tuning by hand. The R1 does it for you with a built in alignment sensor, so you can skip the fiddly setup and get right to work.

Two cameras, two lasers, two encoders

The R1 scans your material, measures its height and sets the focus on its own. Placement is within 0.2 mm, so cuts land where you drew them. It can also work on curved surfaces and round items.

Fast and sharp

The laser head moves at up to 1000 mm/s with 20,000 mm/sΒ² acceleration. A fine spot size of 0.11 mm with the short lens gives crisp detail on photos, text and inlays.

Smoke goes out, not in your face

A crossflow air design pulls smoke across the bed and out the back through the included fan and hose. A built in 30 L/min air pump keeps the lens clean and cuts cleaner edges.

Safety built in

The enclosed body is Class 1, so it is safe to be near while it runs. It stops if the lid opens, watches for flames, and has a safety key and a big red emergency stop.

Touchscreen and health checks

The screen shows job status and machine health, so you know when it needs care. Send jobs over dual band Wi-Fi or USB from Bambu Suite on Windows or macOS.

Grows with add ons

Add the Riser Base for tall items, the Conveyor for boards up to 3 m long, or the Rotary for cups and tumblers. These are sold separately.

Good to know

  • Plan your space. The R1 needs about 1140 x 860 mm of table space and a way to vent smoke outside, like a window.
  • The Riser Base, Conveyor, Rotary, medium and long focus lenses, Vision Encoder, auto fire extinguisher and the E1 Pro air purifier are sold separately.
  • With the Riser Base or Conveyor fitted, the R1 is a Class 4 laser. Wear CO2 laser safety glasses in that setup.
  • Do not cut PVC or vinyl. They give off harmful gas. Bare metal can not be marked; use coated metal.
  • Auto material recognition works with Bambu Lab branded materials. Other materials work fine with manual settings.
  • Round item work on shapes like cones is coming in a future firmware update.
